Nieuw-Rotterdam

Nieuw -Rotterdam was the former capital of the district of Nickerie in Suriname. It was located on the right bank of the River Nickerie. This city was destroyed in 1875 by a storm surge, in 1879 Nickerie was on the left bank of the river built on the present site Nieuw Nickerie -.

History

Around 1820 the first settlement was founded, which reached its peak in the 1860s. The city lay on the right bank of the Nickerie near the mouth, on a narrow strip of land between the river and the Atlantic Ocean, called Cordonspunt. Nieuw -Rotterdam was built along two roads, including the Kerkstraat, which ran from south to north and ended on the church tower. There were several public buildings, a fortified military post and barracks.

A first storm surge was invading the city in 1866, 1875 there was another, the Nieuw Rotterdam completely destroyed.

Residents and business

The city was populated mainly by merchants who traded with the neighboring Guyana. In the vernacular, it was considered a " paradise of the smugglers ."
