Nimodipine (trade name: Nimotop ®, manufactured by Bayer) is a drug (calcium channel blocker ) from the group of 1,4- dihydropyridines.
By blocking calcium channels, it has a relaxing effect on vascular muscles, supposedly particularly in the brain. It is used after subarachnoid hemorrhage to prevent vasospasm (blood vessel spasms ) and thus to secure the cerebral circulation. ( Such vessel spasms can be triggered by serotonin and hemoglobin degradation products. )
Nimodipine is also admitted to age-related brain disorders ( nootropic).
