Ninian Stephen

Sir Ninian Martin Stephen, KG, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, KStJ ( born June 15, 1923 in Oxfordshire; native Ninian Martin Stephen ) was between 1982 and 1989 Australian Governor-General.

Life

Born in England, Stephen emigrated as a child to Australia, where he attended the University of Melbourne studied law later. As his studies were interrupted by the Second World War, where he served in the Australian Army in New Guinea and Borneo, he was able to complete it until 1950. In 1952 he was appointed to the Victorian Bar. In the 60s Ninian Stephen was one of Australia's leading lawyers in the field of economic and constitutional law.

1970 Stephen was appointed judge of the High Court of Australia. In the same year he was knighted. Although his appointment was made by a Liberal government, he was regarded as a conservative advocate of the rights of the states. He was part of the " moderate center " of the court. Along with the majority of the judges, he confirmed in 1982 with the judgment in Case Koowarta the validity of the Racial Discrimination Act, a law against racial discrimination, which was in 1975 entered into force.

In 1982, Stephen was appointed by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser to the Governor-General. Just like its predecessor, Sir Zelman Cowen, he was a "safe" choice: discrete, politically neutral and equipped with very good constitutional knowledge. After the change of government in 1983, he was able to work without difficulty with the Labor government led by Bob Hawke. Hawke extended 1987 Stephens term by 18 months to get it, which he had promised the post of Bill Hayden, to enable you to choose the date of his departure from the policy itself.

In the 1990s, Stephen acted in a case as an ad hoc judge at the International Court in The Hague.
