Nišava District

Nišavski okrug ( Serbian Cyrillic Нишавски округ ) is an administrative district in the eastern half of the Serbian heartland.

It consists of the following municipalities ( opstine ):

  • Opština Aleksinac
  • Opština Svrljig
  • Opština Merošina
  • Opština Ražanj
  • Opština Niš
  • Opština Doljevac
  • Opština Gadžin Han

The district has, according to the 2002 census, a population of 382 461. The main administrative center is the city of Niš.

In the vicinity of Niš is also a unique monument in this form, the skull tower skull tower. It was built by the Ottomans from the bones and skulls of the enemy warriors who had fallen in the battle of Čegar 1809.

The economic focus of the region form the electrical industry Niš, machinery, tobacco factories and the textile company " Niteks ".
