Podunavlje District

Podunavlje (Serbian Подунавски округ, Podunavski okrug ) is a Serbian administrative district in the north of the Serbian heartland. It is geographically the smallest of all Serbian districts.

This district has, according to the 2002 census, a population of 226 589. The main administrative center is the city of Smederevo.

History

Smederevo was the capital of Serbia in the 14th century, there stood the palace of the Serbian prince Đurađ Brankovic. The palace was completed in 1430 and includes the palace itself, the chapel and the home of the royal family. With the old town cemetery is an old church from the 14th century, which served temporarily as the treasury of the Royal Family.

Economy

Smederevo has both for the district and nationally economic importance, because some of the leading companies have their headquarters in the city. These include metal-processing operations, such as " Zelvoz ", which develops technologies for passenger transport, and produces " Fragram ", the construction machinery, excavators and cranes.
