Nothobranchiidae

Nothobranchius rachovii

The Nothobranchiidae are a family of African Zahnkärpflinge ( Cyprinodontiformes ). They were counted before the Cyprinodontidae, and are therefore like this Egg-laying tooth carp called ( killifish ). They live in fresh water, rarely in brackish water. There are small fish from 2.5 to 13 centimeters in length. Most of the approximately 250 species remain below 10 centimeters.

Some species inhabit only temporarily existing water bodies that form in the rainy season and dry out in the dry seasons, with the eggs of the fish survive in the mud. These types are referred to as seasonal fish or anual killifish. However, due to the conditions in their home waters, these animals are relatively short-lived.

From the family of Nothobranchiidae originate a range of popular aquarium fish. In particular, male fish are extremely vivid and well drawn, which explains their popularity among aquarists. Some of the animals are quite aggressive both towards conspecifics as well as to dissimilar fish, which is why they should preferably be kept in a species tank. There, the attitude of one male with several females is recommended. In larger basins, the socialization of several males is usually possible.
