Rachows killifish ( Nothobranchius rachovii )

Nothobranchius rachovii, also called the German Rachows killifish, is a Zahnkärpfling the genus Nothobranchius. There is a seasonal fish.

Features

The males are 5 cm, females 4 cm long. The coloration is very variable in this species. The males have a blue-red or blue-white or red- white patterned body. Often the edge of the caudal fin is colored red. Dorsal and anal fins are usually blue or brownish colored with red or white patches.

Distribution and habitat

The species lives in East Africa, mainly in Mozambique. The fish live in water-bearing seasonal pools and ponds, and are therefore rarely older than half a year in the wild. The water bodies are mostly unshaded and not overgrown with water plants.

Reproduction and fighting dogs

The male impressed before the female and umschwimmt it. Is this ready to mate, so it follows to a spawning ground. For spawning, the female clings closely to the male and both burrow a few inches deep into the soil, there is spawned. In the wild, the habitat of Nothobranchius dries out rachovii. The eggs remain moist but rest in the earth, there to develop the young fish. In the next rainy season they hatch then.

In the aquarium, you can spawn the fish in a peat layer. The peat is dried to residual moisture and then stored in a plastic bag. It is important that the Torfansatz not moldy or verpilzt. After 5-7 months you are the peat in the breeding tank where the fry hatch after a few hours.
