Nurmijärvi

Nurmijärvi [ nurmijærvi ] is a municipality in the south of Finland. It lies about halfway between Helsinki ( 37 km) and Riihimäki on the European road 12 Because of the location in the Helsinki region, near the Finnish capital, Nurmijärvi has grown rapidly in recent years and is now, in terms of population numbers, the largest rural municipality of Finland. The area is 367.32 km ² of which 4.83 km ² is water. The place was in 1775 a separate parish. Hyvinkää belonged until 1917 to Nurmijärvi.

The place was named after the former lake Nurmijärvi. This was in the midst of the congregation; he was drained from the 1920s to the 1950s for agricultural land reclamation.

Nurmijärvi is the birthplace of the writer Kivi. In his novel Seven Brothers recalls the coat of arms of the municipality.
