Background

Ringo Starr had a falling out during the recording of the song Back In The USSR with the remaining Beatles and temporarily left the band. He traveled to Sardinia, where he had a yacht of his friend Peter Sellers borrowed. The captain of the yacht told him in a conversation the life of the octopus, in particular the fact that they build a kind of garden in front of their cave. Starr took a liking to this idea and then wrote Octopus's Garden.

In early 1969, the composition of Starr and George Harrison was further expanded. The latter especially liked the text of the alleged children's song, in which he recognized a deeper meaning. For a while, should be Octopus 's Garden Ringo Starr's vocal contribution to the album Let It Be, but was ultimately not taken it. In the documentary film Let It Be, however, remained a scene allude briefly the song in the Starr and Harrison.

Recording

Octopus 's Garden was recorded in April 1969 at Abbey Road Studios in London. It was produced by George Martin song, assisted by Jeff Jarratt and Phil McDonald.

On April 26, 1969 32 takes of the song were recorded. Three days later, Starr recorded his song, which he, however, completely re- recorded on July 18, 1969. On July 17, 1969, the recordings for McCartney and Harrison were held background vocals. The song has been added some noise, including a bubbling, which was produced by Starr blowing into a glass with a straw air.

Publication

On September 26, 1969 Octopus 's Garden appeared on the album Abbey Road. In single it was not decoupled. An early alternative version ( Take 2 ) was released in 1996 as part of the Anthology series. In addition, the title is on the compilation 1967-1970.
