Geography

Geographical Location

Odisheim located in the Lower Elbe region.

The proximity to the mouth of the Elbe and the North Sea bring with it the danger that in the event of a dike breach at a storm surge the municipality to a large extent but lying more than 2 m above sea level, well below sea level would be flooded to a large extent. One possible scenario is described in the article Glameyer stack.

Community structure

The districts of the municipality are Hadler Lakeside, Kirchdorf, Norder part and Southshore part.

History

The town's name probably goes back to pre-Christian and thus vorkarolingische time and probably means Odin's home. The first documented mention was made, however, until 1325 instead. From 1388 to about 1484 belonged to the parish Odisheim, together with the parishes Steinau, Easter and Wester- Ihlienworth and Wanna ( the "five parishes " ) for the Bailiwick Bederkesa. In the 16th century documents we find the form of the name Odeßhem next to the " Christianized " form Gadeshem ("God 's home" ).
