Olearia paniculata

Olearia paniculata ( common names are in English: Golden Akeake and maori: Akeake ) is a species of the genus Olearia within the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). It is native to New Zealand.

Description

Olearia paniculata grows as evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach the stature heights of up to 6 meters and trunk diameter of 15 to 60 centimeters. The square, grooved branches have a hairy bark. The alternate arranged on the branches leaves are short-stalked. The leaf margins are distinctly wavy. The lower leaf surface is covered with white hairs.

The fragrant, cream-colored, hermaphrodite flowers appear in March to May. The hairy, small fruits ripen in April-June contain a single seed.

Occurrence, location and conditions in culture and risk

Olearia paniculata is on the north island south of the 38th parallel and located on the South Island south to Greymouth and Oamaru from coastal lowlands to the subalpine zone in New Zealand.

Olearia paniculata thrives on moist, mild to severe, well-drained soils. It tolerates acidic, neutral and alkaline soils and can also grow on strongly alkaline soil. However, they preferred lightweight clay or peaty soil. In the shade it does not thrive. O. paniculata is very tolerant to sea near locations and can be used as a wind breaker here.

Olearia paniculata is classified as " not threatened ".

Olearia paniculata is only tolerant to light frost. In the UK they have proved in milder, dominated by maritime climates as frost hardy.

Proliferation in culture

The increase occurs in temperate latitudes by sowing in a greenhouse in a slightly damp substrate, or by cuttings.
