Opuntia triacantha

Opuntia triacantha is a flowering plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet triacantha means (Latin triacanthus ) with hairy spines '.

Description

Opuntia triacantha low growing shrubby with several spreizklimmenden to semi- upright, strong thorny twigs. The bright green, smooth, elongated oval to elongated drive sections that dropped some easy are 4 to 8 inches long. The three most initially white and later yellowish spines are up to 4 inches long.

The brownish yellow to cream flowers are reddish in age and reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The unbedornten red fruits are up to 2.5 inches long.

Systematics and distribution

Opuntia triacantha is common on Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles.

The first description as Cactus triacanthus by Carl Ludwig Willdenow was published in 1814. Robert Sweet set the type in 1826 in the genus Opuntia.
