Orán, Salta

San Ramon de la Nueva Oran, Oran, or simply is the capital of the Oran departments in the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina. It has 72 712 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ), making it the second largest city of the province.

Location

Oran is located in the valley of the river Río Bermejo, somewhat removed from the river, in a forested and rainy area, the region known as the Yungas ( cloud forest ) is counted. To the west and east of the city extend two mountain ranges in north-south direction. The climate belongs to the transition region between the tropics and subtropics: The summers are hot and very humid, winters moderately warm and comparatively dry.

Close contact with the city has several nearby towns in the valley of the Río Bermejo, which together form a metropolitan area with small together approximately 130,000 inhabitants. The largest of them are Hipólito Yrigoyen ( 11,000 inhabitants), Pichanal ( 21,000 inhabitants) and Embarcación (24,000 inhabitants).

History

Already in 1625 should be carried out and the first city founded in the area, but was abandoned. They bore the name of Santiago del Guadalcázar. The final city of San Ramón de la Nueva Oran, however, was only founded in 1794 by Ramón García de León y Pizarro in the checkerboard pattern, which they named after the Algerian city of Oran. She grew up in the 19th century, albeit slowly and in 1871 completely destroyed by an earthquake. In 1889 the city was declared the capital of their respective departments, it was then with 3,500 inhabitants already the second largest city in the province of Salta. 1915, the city was connected to the railway network, thus it continued to grow.

Economy

Dominating the city's economy from the tropical agriculture in the area (among tobacco farming ) and by manufacturing. There is also because of the rain forest environment and nearby National Park Baritú some tourism.
