ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID ) is a non-proprietary, alpha- numeric code that is used to uniquely identify scientific authors.

Application and motivation

ORCID is to enable the electronic assignment of publication and authors. This is necessary because different authors may have identical names, name change (eg marriage) and names in different publications are specified differently ( for example, once the complete first names, other times but only the initials).

ORCID is to become the de facto standard for authorship identification of scientific publications. The establishment is organized by the non-profit organization Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative. The founding members of the initiative include numerous scientific publishing groups (eg Elsevier, Nature Publishing Group, Springer ) and research organizations (eg EMBO, CERN).

ORCID went officially on October 16, 2012 at the start.

Structure of the code

According to the International Standard Name Identifier ( ISNI ) developed ISO 27729 consists of each ORCID - Identifaktor of 16 characters that are written in groups of four. The first fifteen characters are decimal digits, the last check digit, which is also "X" can be.
