Osmar Schindler

Osmar Schindler, actually Osmar Schindler Henry Volkmar, ( born December 22, 1867 in the village of Burkhardt; † June 19, 1927 in Wachwitz near Dresden ) was a German painter.

Life and work

The family moved in 1876 after Bischofswerda, where the father died in 1878. The support of an uncle enabled Schindler still studying at the Dresden Art Academy. Here Ferdinand Pauwels and Leon Pohle were among his teachers. Until his final return to Germany in 1895 Schindler undertook overseas travel to Belgium, Holland, France and Italy.

In 1900 the Academy of Fine Arts brought him back to where he was appointed professor three years later and taught until 1924. He led the Modellierklasse and a painting studio and counted George Grosz, Karl Hanuschplatz, Bernhard Kretzschmar and Paul Wilhelm to his pupils. He also is considered the discoverer of Hanns Georgi.

Schindler saw Bischofswerda as his true home, and the city remained a lifelong. He has created for the sacristy of the local Church of Christ His last, unfinished work. After his death, the artist was buried in the cemetery Loschwitzer.

Topics

As an artist, Schindler is mainly known for its wall, ceiling and window paintings in Saxon churches, including the St. Anne's Church and Christ Church in Dresden Dresden -Klotzsche. However, his most important works are the oil painting in Kumtlampenschein are still held by the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, and David and Goliath. Schindler has also created some well-known portraits, for example of Christian Otto Mohr and Hermann Prell.
