Ossetian Military Road

Ossetic military road is the historical name of a highway across the Great Caucasus. It combines Alagir in Russia with Kutaisi in Georgia and is 270 km long.

The highway follows the Ardon Valley in North Ossetia-Alania in a southwesterly direction, exceeds the Caucasus main ridge on Mamisson pass at 2,820 m above sea level, leads down into the valley of Rioni River by Oni and follows the river through Ambrolauri to Kutaisi, the capital of Imereti region.

The road was built in 1889 by the Russian army as a second major military road through the Caucasus. First, she was an unpaved road that was laterally supported by stones.
