Östersund Municipality

Östersund is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Jämtland County and the historic county of Jämtland. The main town of the municipality is Östersund.

Geography

The municipality extends from the lake Storsjön (including Storsjöodjuret ) about 60 km to the northeast. Through the community of Indalsälven flows.

Through the community lead the European Routes 14 and 45, the National Highway 87 and the railway line between Stockholm and Ånge - Trondheim and the Inland Railway. Furthermore, there is a small airfield.

History

In 1786, the city Östersund by King Gustav III. raised to the city and the administration of the municipality moved from Frösön to there. For wealth Östersund arrived in the 19th century by the timber industry.

Economy

Östersund was formerly an important agricultural community, but today is dominated by the administrative and service sector. The Provincial Administration, the Administration of the Province parliament, the local government and military facilities are major employers in the public sector. Also, the education with the University, the labor market administration and some private companies in the field of information technology is important. Industrial areas are next to the main town Tändsbyn, Lit and Brunflo.

Attractions

The islands Andersön, Skansholmen and isoenzyme in the large lake are nature reserves.

On the mainland near the islands a medieval church ruin is the ruin of a defensive tower, the King Sverre in 1178 after a victory was built on the ice of the large lake. Not far away, in Brunflo, is a second medieval defense tower, probably built as a counterpart.

The observation tower Frösö whose tip lies 468 meters above sea level, allows a panoramic view of Östersund, Frösön and the large lake.

The end of July will be held the Storsjöyran music festival in Östersund.

Zoos

The elk farm near Moose Garden in Ostersund Orrviken makes it possible to experience elk up close.

The Frösö Zoo is home to over 700 species of animals.

Museums

The Jamtli shows the history of the region, prepared for children. The City Museum showcases the history of the city of Ostersund Ostersund from 1786 until 1930. Moreover, there is an aircraft museum, a Police Museum and the Sommarhagen Museum.
