Ostrovnoy, Murmansk Oblast

Ostrownoi (Russian Островной ) is a small town in Murmansk Oblast (Russia) with 2171 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northeast of the Kola Peninsula approximately 280 line kilometers southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Murmansk on the Swjatonosski Bay of the Barents Sea.

Ostrownoi the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly and is among the Closed cities of Russia.

The town is not accessible by land.

History

A Sami settlement called Iokanga (later Jokanga, Russian Йоканьга, after which opens near the river and the islands in the bay of the same name ) was first mentioned in the 16th century. In 1938 it was renamed the village in Gremikha.

1951 using the Gulags, the construction of the Kolaeisenbahn (official codename building 509) was started, the main route Apatity should connect with the Jokangabucht 300 km away. After laying of about 110 kilometers of track construction after Stalin's death in 1953 has been set. A portion of the completed route exists today as part of the compound according Rewda, but the place remains without any connection to the road or rail network in Russia.

Was about three kilometers from Gremikha a secret base of the Soviet Northern Fleet, including for nuclear submarines, built with associated residential development and the code name Murmansk -140. 1981 Gremikha was incorporated in this settlement.

In 1992, the city was right under the present name given (derived from Russian ostrow for island). With the crisis of the Russian Navy since the 1990s, the population declined dramatically.
