Otto III, Duke of Swabia

Otto of Schweinfurt called White (c. 995; † September 28, 1057 ), was the son of Henry of Schweinfurt, margrave in Nordgau and Gerberga of Henneberg from 1048 and Duke of Swabia.

Life

Due to the heritage left behind by his father, especially in Radenzgau and in Schweinfurt, Otto was one of the most powerful feudal lords in the East Franks. He was 1014 Graf at the bottom Altmühltherme ( Kelsgau ), 1024-1031 Margrave in Nordgau 1034 Graf at the bottom Naab. He took part in the campaigns against Bohemia ( 1040 defeat at Cham ), Hungary and Poland, and was in 1048, after the death of Duke Otto II of Swabia in 1047, by King Henry III. made his successor. However, he continued - as a loyal follower of his king - in the nine years of operation, no noticeable accents. In the battle of Biwanka he erliet a defeat.

Otto became engaged on behalf of Henry in 1035 with Matilda, a daughter of the Polish king Boleslaw. However, the marriage did not take place because the engagement was broken off the next year again. Instead, he married - again from rich political reasons - Ermengarde, † 1078 before April 29, a daughter of Margrave Ulrich Manfred von Turin ( Manfred of Susa ) from the family of Arduine and Berta degli Obertenghi, so that the compounds of the northern and southern parts of the empire should be strengthened.

Progeny

Otto and Ermengarde had five daughters:

  • Berta ( Alberada ) ( † January 1, 1103 )
  • Gisela († February 22? ), Heiress of the goods to Kulmbach and Plass castle, ∞ Arnold ( † 1098 ), Count of Unterdießen

  • Beatrix (* 1040, † 1104), heiress of Schweinfurt ∞ Henry II ( † around 1087/89 ), Count of Hildrizhausen, Margrave on the Nordgau ( son of Eberhard I Hildrizhausen )

Otto of Schweinfurt was buried in Schweinfurt. Ermengarde married his second wife in 1058 Count Egbert I of Brunswick († 1068 ), Margrave of Meissen ( Brunonen ). With the death of Otto the political rise of Rudolf of Rheinfelden began as subsequent Duke of Swabia, who later became anti-king to Henry IV
