Oullins

Oullins is a French town with 25 257 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Rhône department in the Rhône -Alpes. The inhabitants call themselves Oullinois (it).

Geography

Oullins located 6 kilometers south-west of Lyon. The Yzeron flows through the municipal area and the Rhone flows between Oullins and Lyon.

History

Oullins 855 was first mentioned in a charter of Lothar I as Aulanius. The city was situated on the old Roman road that linked Lyon with Narbonne.

In the Huguenot wars (1562-1598) Oullins was devastated. Until the Industrial Revolution, the main economic activity in Oullins agriculture and trade were. As 1847 Alphonse Clément- Desormes a company for the manufacture of locomotives. The plant was closed after the Second World War.

Policy

The city belongs to the Association of Cities Communauté urbaine de Lyon. Since 1962 is twinned with Nürtingen in Germany and since 1994 in Pescia Italy. The partnership with Nürtingen was one of the first twinning of France.

Attractions

A part of the Roman aqueduct of Gier ( one of the four aqueducts of Lugdunum / Lyon) crosses at Oullins the Yzeron. The " Aqueduct Beaunant " is named after a village that lies between Oullins and Chaponost named.
