It has about 4,991 inhabitants ( as of 2004). Known worldwide for the District of Ourém belonging Catholic sanctuary of Fátima.

History

The place was known among the Moors than Abdegas until it was conquered in 1136 by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal later by the Arabs. Henceforth he was named after a nearby castle Aurem, from which evolved the present name. 1180 Ourém received its first city charter.

The third Earl of Ourém, Nuno Álvares Pereira, secured the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota 1385 the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal. The fourth Earl of Ourém, Alfonso of Braganza, the royal council invited here, the Cortes.

After the surrounding towns in the region by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the Napoleonic invasions suffered considerable damage in the early 19th century, Ourém grew into a small town named Vila Nova de Ourém. In the course of various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg Ourém was middle of the 19th century headquarters of an independent circuit. In one of his churches, in Fatima, is said to have issued on May 13, 1917 a Marian apparition. As a result, here was one of the greatest shrines in the Catholic world, with several million visitors annually.

Of 1991 the small town ( Vila ) to the city ( Cidade ) was charged.

Sports

Nationally known is the women's football department of Atlético Ouriense. There, the club won the championship in 2013 the top league in the country, the Campeonato Nacional. Among the other football clubs in the circle of the CD Fátima is mentioned.

Ourém is the administrative seat of the homonymous district ( concelho ) in the district of Santarém. June 30, 2011 had the circle 45 887 inhabitants in an area of 416.6 km ².
