Oyo State

Oyo is a state of Nigeria with its capital at Ibadan, which is 3.56581 million inhabitants (2005) and largest city.

Geography

The state is located in the west of the country, bordered to the north by the state of Kwara, to the south by Ogun State, on the west by Benin and to the east by Osun State.

History

The state was formed February 3, 1976 from part of the former state of " Western ". First governor was between March 1976 and July 1978 David Medayese Jembibewon. Current Governor Adebayo Alao - since 2006 Akala.

The state is divided into 33 Local Government Areas. These are: Afijio, Akinyele, Atiba, Atisbo, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan North - East, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South - East, Ibadan South-West, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa East, North Ibarapa, Ido, IRepo, Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Lagelu, Ogbomosho North, South Ogbomosho, Ogo - Oluwa, Olorunsogo, Oluyole, Ona - Ara, Orelope, Ori - Irishman, Oyo, Oyo East, Saki East, Saki West and Surulere.

Economy

The main economic activity is agriculture. The climatic conditions allow the cultivation of cereals, maize, yams, cassava, millet, rice, bananas, cocoa, and so on. There are also important livestock and milk production as well as the extraction of mineral resources. There are degraded clay, kaolin and aquamarine.
