Paheli

Beauty and the Ghost (Hindi: पहेलि, Paheli; lit. translation: puzzle) is an Indian fantasy film of Amol Palekar from the year 2005.

Action

Bhanwarlal is a businessman and lives in Navalgarh in the state of Rajasthan, along with his wife and sons Sunderlal and Kishan. Sunderlal is married to Gajrobai and has a son. As Sunderlal loses the annual camel race, he leaves the house in shame, never to return.

Bhanwarlals other son Kishan is married to the beautiful Lachchi. On the wedding night but Kischan wants nothing to do with his wife. He first wants to make money rather than go to lead his life as a husband, so he tells his wife Lachchi, he had to go away for five years. Lachchi is deeply sad, but that does not last long, as Kishan very next day is back. He tells his father Bhanwarlal that he met a holy sage who has promised him every morning for five gold coins. Now that the income of the young family is secured, Bhanwarlal has no objection to Kishan remains. Lachchi is overjoyed. When the two finally are alone in the bedroom, says the now friendly Kishan her but that he was a ghost. The real Kishan had actually run away, he, the Spirit, but I have fallen in love with her of such, that in order to be close to her kishans have taken shape. Lachchi must decide whether she wants to spend the next five years with this lovely image of her husband now - or whether it rejects the mind and wants to wait for her husband repellent. She decides to love, and thus for the mind.

After four years, is again a camel race, and this time wins Bhanwarlals camel. Then Lachchi is pregnant. On the day of birth of the right Kishan comes back. The whole family is surprised and does not know who of the two is the real Kishan, as both look like twins. To find it, look for it on the wise shepherd who left the two tasks. At the end of the spirit is put into a water bag and thrown away from the correct Kishan.

Lachchi is so sad when she learns of it. You must live with the thought not to see her great love and the father of her daughter. When she evening, again disguised as came to the wedding night, in kishans room, she tells him that she knew of all this and tells him that before she has to start a new life with him. But he tells her that he is the Spirit, and is driven into the body of her husband, because he has promised her and his daughter, they never leave. Overjoyed, they fall into each other arms and a common happiness, nothing stands in the way. And the brother, Sunderlal, returns to his wife and son.

Shaping

The film is a typical representative of the Bollywood -called style. It contains a lot of vocals and dance interludes. A puppet couple comments on the activities of the mind. A ballet appears to wind down, danced in the style of puppets. The time of action is not defined, but appears to be in the pre- colonial era. A slight criticism of the stubborn pursuit of profit is recognized. The shepherd who resolves the conflict wants no reward: his animals will not eat gold.

Background

Filming should take place in the Thar desert in Rajasthan. As it was too expensive, an artificial desert was created. Originally Ghost Ka Dost was provided as the title of the film. As Paheli he had on 24 June 2005 in India and the UK premiere. The film was produced by Shahrukh Khan's wife Gauri and Red Chillies production of Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla.
