Palaeotropical

The Paläotropis is a biogeographic region and represents both a large floral kingdom as well as a Faunenreich; they include the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World, so almost all of Africa, India and Southeast Asia.

Floral kingdom

The paläotropische floral kingdom has different limits than the Faunenreich. The floral kingdom also includes the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula, but not the Kapgebiet ( capensis). To the east and New Guinea is one of them, but not Polynesia, part of the oceanic floral kingdom.

Characteristic taxa ( Flore elements of the phytogeographical unit ) are Annonengewächse ( Annonaceae ) leaf seed plants ( Combretaceae ) leaf fruit plants ( Dipterocarpaceae ), nutmeg plants ( Myristicaceae ), pandanus plants ( Pandanaceae ), Sterculiaceae ( Sterculioideae ), dragon trees (Dracaena ) and snake plant ( Sansevieria ).

The Paläotropis is divided into two ( three) of the kingdom:

  • African Underdark ( with the floral region Madagascar)
  • Indomalayisches Underdark ( with Guinea)
  • Partial Polynesia is slammed as a realm of Paläotropis.

Faunenreich

The Faunenreich has other limits than the floral kingdom: the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula are not among them, but the Cape. In Southeast Asia, a part of the Indonesian islands belongs to Faunenreich Wallacea, the transition area to the Australis.

The Faunenreich is divided into two regions:

  • Äthiopis ( sub-Saharan Africa and southern Arabia ). Typical representatives are among the fishes bichirs, Mormyridae and the lungfish ( Protopterus ); the clawed frogs (Xenopus ); among birds the Struthionidae, guinea fowl, secretaries, and mouse Turaco birds; among the mammals, the hyrax, hippo, golden moles, giraffes, gazelles and galagos. Which is divided into two sub-regions Äthiopis: African subregion
  • Madagassis (Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles and Mascarene Islands ). Characteristic animals are the Lappenpittas ( Philepittidae ) tenrecs ( Tenrecidae ), lemurs ( Lemuriformes ) and Malagasy predators ( Eupleridae ).
