In phonetics, palatal describes the articulation of a sound on the palate. A Palatal is formed by direct contact of the tongue with the front (hard) palate (Latin palatum durum) or by approximating the tongue on this (see: Velar ).
The International Phonetic Alphabet, the following formed by contact with the palate palatal consonants are represented:
- [c ] voiceless palatal plosive
- [ ɟ ] voiced palatal plosive
- [ ɲ ] voiced palatal nasal
- [ ç ] voiceless palatal fricative ( I - Sound) For example, in German I
- [ ʝ ] voiced palatal fricative, the voiced counterpart to the German ( voiceless ) I -sound
- [j ] voiced palatal approximant
- [ ʎ ] voiced palatal lateral approximant
- [ ʄ ] voiced palatal implosive
