Panayiotis Demetriou

Panayiotis Demetriou (Greek Παναγιώτης Δημητρίου, born May 6, 1939 in Strongylo ) is a Cypriot politician of the Christian Democratic Dimokratikos Synagermos ( Democratic Rally ).

Life

Panayiotis Demetriou attended from 1957 to 1959 and graduated from the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus from 1965 to 1968 to study law ( Barrister -at -Law). Since 1970 he has been a lawyer. He was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour of the French Republic.

Policy

In his party Democratic Rally in 1989 he was Secretary for organizational matters at the Democratic Rally and was from 1994 to 2003 on the board. From 1996 to 2004 he sat as chairman of the Legal Committee in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and was shortly before the accession of Cyprus to the European Union as observers of Parliament at the European Parliament. He was previously from 1997 to 2001 Chairman of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council.

After the accession of Cyprus to the EU Demetriou was elected in June 2004 in the European Parliament, where he served until July 2009 as a member of the Group of the European People's Party. Demetriou was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He was also in the delegations to the Parliamentary Cooperation Committees EU-Armenia, EU -Azerbaijan and EU - Georgia, and in the Delegation for relations with India.
