Pancalia baldizzonella

Pancalia baldizzonella is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of the splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 15 millimeters. The front wings have a brownish yellow color. This is also the only feature, with which you can externally distinguish the type of Pancalia black ella.

The genital armature of the males shows no reliable distinguishing features to differentiate Pancalia black ella. The genital armature of females differs by the smaller and more regular square sterigma of Pancalia black ella.

Dissemination

The species is known only from the type locality. This is in Italy at Monte Pollino in Pollino National Park.

Biology

The biology of the species is unknown. The moths were collected in July.

System

In Pancalia baldizzonella it is probably only a form of Pancalia black ella. Pancalia of types known to the bright orange color fade over time. This is probably the explanation for the pale coloring of the two type specimens. This assumption is also supported by the late date including the collection. Furthermore, no significant differences in the genital valves can be detected. Koster & Sinev 2010 have therefore been proposed to maintain the species status until further Falter material is of the type locality for investigations.
