Pašman

Pasman is an island in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of northern Dalmatia south of Zadar. and belongs to Croatia Zadar County.

With approximately 21 km in length, a width of up to 4.1 km and 57 km ² area it extends from northwest to southeast parallel to the Dalmatian coast, from which it is separated by about 4 km wide " Pašmanski channel ". The highest point of the island is 272 m high mountain Veliki Bokolj. The island consists of Cretaceous limestone and dolomite.

In the southeast, the island is reached by a ferry from the island village Tkon to the opposite mainland port of Biograd na Moru. A road connects all places and leads north of the island via a bridge built in 1973 over the small " Ždrelac " said Inlet, to the neighboring island of Ugljan. Opposite the island is the village of Pakoštane, right on the coast.

Main livelihoods for about 3,500 residents represent agriculture, tourism and fishing; they live mostly on the side facing the mainland, flat, north-eastern coast of the island. Here the green of olive groves, gardens and vineyards characterize the countryside. The steep and rugged, uninhabited southwestern coast of the island is divided by numerous bays and is often overgrown with maquis.

The island has been inhabited since Illyrian and Roman times. From 1050 the island belonged to the diocese of Biograd, from 1126 to the archbishopric of Zadar. During the invasions of the Turks and the Venetians, it served as a refuge for the surrounding coastal communities. It was not conquered. In the small village of Kraj there is a Franciscan monastery from the 14th century with a small museum. And near Tkon is located on the mountain Cokovac a small Benedictine monastery of the same period.
