Passabe

Passabe ( Pasab, Pasabe, Pássabe ) is a village and a sub-district in the East Timorese enclave of Oecusse. The place was the scene of Passabe massacre, reported on also the documentary Passabe.

The place

The village lies in Suco Abani, on the Rio Passabe, near the border between the East Timorese enclave of Oecusse and the Indonesian West Timor at an altitude of 794 meters above the sea. In the immediate neighborhood are well integrated with each other most of the places of Sucos. To the center of the settlement to Passabe around there are two primary schools, a preparatory school for the secondary stage ( Escola Secundaria Pre- Passabe ), a community health center and occupies one of a helipad. The subdistrict

Passabe forms the south of Oecusse. To the north are the Subdistrikte Nitibe and Oesilo, in all other directions borders Passabe to Indonesia. 95 % of households in Passabe grow cassava, 94 % rice, 95 % corn, 89 % coconut, 95 % vegetables and 67 % coffee.

History

The Passabe Massacre

Passabe was the scene of the worst massacre in Oecusse, during the riots after the independence referendum of 1999. Soldiers of the armed forces of Indonesia and 200 pro- Indonesian militiamen Sakunar ( Scorpio) murdered initially between the 7th and 9th September 1999 subdistrict Oesilo in the villages Tumin, Quiubiselo, Nonquican (all Suco Bobometo ) and Nibin ( Usitaqueno ) 17 people with machetes and firearms. Houses were burned down and deported the survivors in Indonesian West Timor. In Imbate arrived, 55 young men were separated by soldiers, policemen and militiamen from the other, tied up and beaten. The originating from Singapore James Leong and Lynn Lee shot a documentary called Passabe playing in the village. The film depicts the lives of some residents Passabes five years after the violence. The life of a former member of the militia is shown and how the community deals with what had happened. In January 2006, the film from the Jakarta International Film Festival was excluded.

The independent East Timor

August 1, 2012, there was a clash between Indonesians and East Timorese at the border. They pelted with stones until security forces from two countries separated the combatants.
