Paterson Inlet

Paterson Inlet is a large natural harbor on the east coast of Iceland Stewart in the south of New Zealand.

The region was first inhabited by Māori, who settled at a place called The Neck. This is a long peninsula extending from the south coast to the mouth of the harbor. The only town of Stewart Iceland, Oban, situated on the north coast of Paterson Inlet near its mouth. The area was formerly used as a base for whaling on right whales. The holdings were decimated, but frequently whales were sighted in recent years again.

Paterson Inlet has three main branches: the North Arm and the South West Arm are in the upper part of the bay, 15 km from the mouth. The latter is the outflow of a large marshy area which covers a large part of the north part of the island.
