Pawłowice, Pszczyna County

Pawłowice ( German: Pawlowitz ) is a city and seat of a rural community in the south of Poland. He belongs to the powiat Pszczyński the Silesian Voivodeship.

Geography

Pawlowitz located 15 kilometers from the district town Pszczyna ( Pless ) away and about 35 kilometers south of Katowice in Upper Silesia hills 235-285 m asl Pawłowice is a Steinkohlenort ( coal mine in Pniówek ) and with more than 10,000 inhabitants, is one of the most populous villages of Poland. Neighboring municipalities are Jastrzębie -Zdrój, Pszczyna, Strumień, Suszec, Zebrzydowice and Zory.

History

The town was founded in the 13th century, the first recorded mention of a village " Pawlowicz " dated 1281st 1293 will be the place parish, whose Gothic stone church dates from 1586. From the German eastern settlement until the 15th century, the area around Pless was mainly inhabited by German population. Since the 16th century, yet the Polish Archdiocese of Krakow belonging border town Pless was increasingly Polonized again so that the Polish population soon became the majority. 1910, the rural population of the surrounding villages of Pless was largely polnischsprachig, or used the Upper Silesian dialect ( Polish water ). This was also demonstrated in the popular vote in Upper Silesia on the future membership of Upper Silesia from 1921 in which 74 % of the residents of the district voted for Poland, while in town Pless 3,759 or 75.5 % of the valid votes were cast for Germany.

The place belonged to 1922, the Principality of Pless and to Prussia. After the Polish annexation of East Upper Silesia in 1922 and since 1945 Pawlowitz belongs to Poland. Between 1975 and 1998 the town belonged administratively to the province of Katowice.
