Pčinja District

Pčinja (Serbian Пчињски округ, Pčinjski okrug ) is an administrative district in the southeast of the Serbian heartland. The district is bounded on the east by Bulgaria, on the south by Macedonia, on the west by the Kosovo and the north of the district Jablanica. The main administrative center is the city of Vranje.

Population

This district has a population of 227 690 according to the census of 2002 and is characterized multi-ethnic. The municipality Bosilegrad ( 70.86 % Bulgarians ) is a center of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia. The municipalities Presevo ( 89.1 % Albanians ) and Bujanovac ( 54.7 % Albanians ) are mostly populated by ethnic Albanian. The census in 2011 was boycotted by the Albanians for the most part. Therefore, no recent data on the population structure.

History

The cultural and historical monuments are several centuries old. The oldest military installation is a castle from the 13th century. Also worth seeing are the Turkish baths from the 16th century, the house of the Pasha dating from 1765, in which a primary school was opened in 1881.

Economy

The economic activity in the district includes mining, construction, textile industry, foreign trade, agriculture and forestry. The best known are the furniture factory " Simpo " and the textile factory " Yumcog ".
