Pedro de Mena

Pedro de Mena y Medrano, also Pedro de Mena (* 1628 in Granada, † October 13, 1688 in Málaga ) was a Spanish sculptor of the Baroque.

Mena y Medrano, whose exact date of birth is unknown, but his baptismal certificate dated August 20, 1628, graduated from the mid- 1650s trained as a sculptor at Alonso Cano, the head of the Sevillian school of sculpture. From 1658 he worked in the Spanish city of Malaga, where he worked in four years, 40 wooden reliefs on the choir stalls of the Cathedral (Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación ) created, which are perceived as very realistic and at the same time shaped by a deep religiosity. Other well-known works Mena y Medrano is a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi in 1663, which can be seen in the Cathedral of Toledo, and St. Mary Magdalene in the Museo Nacional de Excultura in Valladolid.
