Pelham Humfrey

Pelham Humfrey ( Humphrey, Humphrys ) (* about 1647, place unknown; † July 14, 1674 in Windsor ) was an English composer.

The young Pelham Humfrey was among the first singers of the English Chapel Royal at its reestablishment after the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660 by the Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal, Captain Henry Cooke. After his voice broke Humfrey spent studying in France (probably among others, Jean -Baptiste Lully ) and Italy. During his absence he was appointed Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, in 1672 he became Master of the Children. Among his pupils there was the young Henry Purcell. Humfrey died at the age of only 26 years, while he was with the court at Windsor. From his work a few Anthems and Services, Odes and Masques are obtained.
