Penciclovir is an analogue of the nucleobase guanine. It is used as antiviral agent against herpes simplex viruses.

Application

Penciclovir has been approved for topical use in herpes labialis ( outward ) in Germany as acyclovir and inhibits DNA synthesis in the infected cells. Unlike the acyclovir known since about 1983 Novartis holds the patent on this drug. So low-cost generics do not exist. Penciclovir has almost the same structure as the original substance acyclovir. Such as acyclovir, it is effective both when applied in the early phase and in the bubble phase and shorten the healing process, up to 30 % compared to the application of a placebo.
