Penijõe ( German Pennijöggi ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Lihula ( Lihula vald ) in Lääne.

Description and History

The place has now only two inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is 28 kilometers south-east of the county town of Haapsalu.

1368 Bach Pennipanoya was first mentioned. The creek, a tributary of the Kasari, ( Kasari Jõgi ) gave the place its name. In the first half of the 17th century next to the mill was a yard.

Best of Penijõe

1765 is the first time the manor of Penijõe recorded in documents. It was later owned by the Middendorff family. Last owner was the Baltic German nobility Johann Andreas of weather -Rosenthal before the expropriation in the course of land reform in Estonia 1919.

Today's mansion in the ( neo) classical style emerged in the second half of the 18th century. In 1820 the first floor was added in wood and fitted with a four-columned portico with a triangular pediment. On the roof there are two small coat chimneys.

From 1935 to 1955 in the former mansion of the good is an agricultural college was housed, then apartments. Since 2000 located in the renovated building, the management of the National Park Matsalu ( Matsalu Rahvuspark ), the information center and a natural history museum.
