Penthalaz is a municipality in the district of Gros- de -Vaud in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Penthalaz is located on 491 m above sea level. M., 1.5 km east of Cossonay and 13 km north- west of the canton capital Lausanne ( straight line ). The scattered village extends to a slightly inclined towards the south slope above the valley of the Venoge, in the Gros de Vaud, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​3.9 km ² large municipality area includes a section of Gros de Vaud, the granary of the canton of Vaud. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the high area of Gros de Vaud, on the corridor Sur Bule 503 m above sea level. M., on the hill Braye 514 meters above sea level. M. reached. The northern border is formed by the valley of the Ruisseau de Malomba, a left Bach Venoge. In the west of the municipality floor extends into the Talniederung Venoge with the wetland Bois de Vaux. Population

With 2979 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Penthalaz belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud and is also the second largest municipality in the district Cossonay. Of the 87.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.8 % and 2.3 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Penthalaz amounted in 1900 to 372 inhabitants. During the 20th century the population grew steadily, during the last decades increased the growth (1960 the municipality had 1260 inhabitants).

Economy

Penthalaz was until the end of the 19th century mainly by agriculture embossed village. Today, the farming and fruit growing have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population.

With the improved transport links to the opening of the railway line Yverdon -Lausanne developed in Venogetal between Cossonay and Penthalaz an industrial district. Here initially left the Grands Moulins de Cossonay ( which still exist under the name of Provimi SA Kliba ) down and condensed milk. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Lausanne area.

Traffic

The community is easily accessible via. It lies on the main road 9 of Lausanne via Cossonay to Vallorbe. The motorway connection Cossonay at the 1981 opened A1 (Lausanne -Yverdon ) is approximately 3 km from the center.

On May 7, 1855 Yverdon- section Bussigny -pres-Lausanne railway line Yverdon -Lausanne was taken with the Penthalaz - Cossonay station in operation. Since 1913, the station transmits only the name Cossonay. In 1897 the inauguration of the funicular Cossonay Gare -Ville (CG ). History

The municipal area cemeteries have been discovered from the Roman period and early medieval burial ground. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1182 under the name Pentala. Later, the spellings Pentalla ( 1387 ), Penthala ( 1574 ) and Pentallaz (1799 ) published. Only since 1841 the current spelling is preserved. The name refers to a place on the slopes (French pente = slope, slope ), Penthalaz is the diminutive of Penthaz.

Penthalaz belonged since the Middle Ages to the rule Cossonay and after 1420 Savoy Kastlanei Cossonay. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. After the collapse of the ancien régime Penthalaz belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay. In 1839, numerous houses were a village destroyed by fire.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Martin is mentioned 1228. It has since been remodeled and restored several times and has wall paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries. In the old town, some houses are ( including the Maison des Dîmes ) from the 17th to 19th centuries.
