Perilipin

Perilipin is the protein which surrounds the surface of the lipid droplets in the fat cells of mammals, in the fat burning enzyme HSL ( hormone -sensitive lipase) protects. Perilipin is therefore important for the structure and the controlled reduction of fat reserves in the body. Mutations in PLIN gene responsible for a rare hereditary lipodystrophy syndrome.

Perilipin is considered a possible target for the treatment of obesity. Without the protective protein coat fat cells are immediately metabolized enzymatically, ie they are broken down with enzymes and fed to the metabolism, as found out scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in experiments with laboratory mice.
