The municipality is located in the district of Ferreira do Alentejo, with an area of 36.4 km ² and 364 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). This gives a population density of 10 inhab. / Km ². Peroguarda is located in the agricultural center of the region, particularly wheat production is of national importance.

History and Significance

In the community a variety discoveries prove the settlement of the area to pre-Roman, Roman, Visigothic and Arab times, with the excavations of the Roman tomb at the Casa da Santa Margarida among the finds in the municipal area has the largest archaeological importance.

The first documented mention Peroguardas, already as an independent municipality, dates from the 15th century.

Peroguarda it is considered a characteristic village of the Alentejo. When selecting the " portugiesischsten village " by the propaganda of the Estado Novo regime, the village was shortlisted and was visited four times in 1938 by the selection committee. The award was given in 1939 finally Monsanto, Peroguarda applies, however, since as the " most Portuguese village " of the Alentejo, and as a very typical example of the villages of the region.

The Corsican, acting particularly in Portugal ethnomusicologist and television director Michel Giacometti (1929 - 1990) was buried here at his request.

Culture and sights

At the edge of the village, the irrigation channels of the alqueva lead past the dam. In addition to the built dam in 1989 Barragem da Capela and the municipal cemetery Cemitério de Peroguarda is in particular the medieval, remodeled in the 18th century nave late Baroque parish church Igreja de Paroquial Peroguarda (also Igreja de Santa Margarida ) under monument protection.
