The Dogo Canario is one of the Fédération Cynologique International (FCI) recognized Spanish breed of dog, also known since the late Middle Ages in Spain ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.1, Standard No. 346 ).
Origin and History
In the Spanish mainland was built in the late Middle Ages, a uniform type of dog, which was selected for the functions as a packer for dangerous game (deer, bear, wild boar), as a war dog when herding dog for cattle and as a watch and guard dog.
These Spanish mastiffs were carried by the conquistadors as war dogs for the conquest of South America. Many of these dogs remained but on the Canary Islands, where they were still bred. There, they lost many of its typical tasks such as bullfighting, working as a driver and packer of herds and hunting dangerous game, so that they almost exclusively as a guard dog were used.
In the Canaries, the Spanish Mastiff was given the " Canario ". The FCI recognized the breed on 4 June 2001 under the name " Dogo Canario " provisionally, 5 July 2011 final.
Description
The Dogo Canario is a hardy dog with a shoulder height of up to 68 cm and weighing 40 to 65 kg. The short, rough, easy-care coat is brindle or fawn. Even smaller white markings and plates occur. Perro de Presa Canario
The American Kennel Club (AKC ) since 1990 leads a breed Perro de Presa Canario in its Foundation Stock Service. The breed standard does not match that of the Dogo Canario.
In Spain, a race named Presa Canario was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2001. Also the published standard there is not identical to the FCI standard for the Dogo Canario. An appropriate recognition for the Dogo Canario does not exist.

Demarcation to the Alano Español

Legal definition of race Alano

The Dogo Canario / Presa Canario is in the cantons of Fribourg, Geneva, Schaffhausen and Thurgau on the race list. The position is subject to authorization in these cantons, banned in the canton of Geneva.
