Perry Belmont

Perry Belmont ( born December 28, 1851 in New York City; † May 25, 1947 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician, diplomat and military officer. He was the son of originating from Alzey banker and politician August Belmont, brother of Oliver Belmont and August Belmont junior.

Belmont graduated from the Everest Military Academy in Hamden (Connecticut) and graduated in 1872 at Harvard University and in 1876 at Columbia Law School. He then spent five years working as a lawyer in New York. His law firm partners were his cousin, the writer Arthur Dudley Vinton and George Frelinghuysen, who later became President of the Ballantine brewery.

From March 1881 to December 1889 Belmont was for the Democratic Party Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives of the United States, where he held until 1887, the Foreign Policy Commission chaired by 1885. Between February and May 1889, he served as United States Ambassador to Spain. During the Spanish- American War of 1898 Belmont served as Major and Inspector General of the First Division during the First World War as a captain.
