Pervomaysk, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Pervomaisk (Russian Первомайск ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 14,568 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 190 km south of the Oblasthauptstadt Nizhny Novgorod close to the border of Mordovia on the upper reaches of the river Umotsch, a left tributary of the little south -flowing river system Alatyr in the Volga.

Pervomaisk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The town was founded as a workers' settlement in connection with the construction of an iron foundry based on local iron ore deposits by the landowner Alexander Karamzin ( son of the historian Nikolai Karamzin and writer ) in the mid -19th century. The plant began to produce in 1853. The settlement was first called taschino after Tascha diminutive of the name of the wife of the owner, Natalia.

On 18 April 1951 a city charter was granted and the place in Pervomaisk renamed (from Russian Perwoje Maja for May Day ).

Culture and sights

Four kilometers from Pervomaisk is the Karstdoline Grafinskije propasti.

At 25 km north in Rajon Pervomaisk located, was first mentioned in the 16th century village of Bolshoi Makatelem is the feral Rogoschka Park to the former country estate of the Karamzin family to be restored, however.

Economy and infrastructure
