Peter DeFazio

Peter Anthony DeFazio ( born May 27, 1947 in Needham, Massachusetts) is an American politician. Since 1987 he represents the fourth electoral district of the state of Oregon in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Peter DeFazio went to 1969 Tufts University in Medford and studied until 1977 at the University of Oregon in Eugene. In the meantime, he served in the U.S. Air Force. After that, he embarked on a political career and became a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1977 to 1982 he worked on the staff of Congressman James H. Weaver. After that, he was from 1983 to 1986 District ( County Commissioner) in Lane County.

In the congressional elections of 1986, DeFazio was elected to succeed James Weaver in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the following years he was elected with a large majority in each case in his office which he has held since January 3, 1987 to today. In the congressional elections of 2008, he managed a vote share of 82%. In Congress, he is committed to reforming the health care system. He was against the Iraq war and for a better labor and education policy. Only on the issue of weapons legislation it is not on the liberal line of his party: It is against the aggravation. In February 2009, he incurred the displeasure of President Barack Obama, when he agreed along with eight other Democrats against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

DeFazio, whose term runs until January 3, 2011, is a member of the following Congress Committees: Committee on Homeland Security, Committee on Natural Resources and Committee on Transportatation and Infrastructure. With his wife Myrnie he lives privately in Springfield.
