Peter II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg

Nikolaus Friedrich Peter of Oldenburg ( born July 8, 1827 in Oldenburg, † June 13, 1900 in Rastede ) was from 1853 to 1900 as Peter II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg.

He was born as the eldest son of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August (1783-1853) and Princess Ida of Anhalt- Bernburg - Schaumburg- Hoym (1804-1828) and succeeded his father on 27 February 1853 in the government. In 1864 he took over the patronage of the founded in Oldenburg Association for the care of wounded warrior who served in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg as a voluntary aid society of the Red Cross. In the same year he rose after the Emperor of Russia transfer all Gottorp inheritance to him, claims to Schleswig -Holstein, but closed February 23, 1867 the Kiel treaty with Prussia, by which he compared his waiver of those claims, the Office Ahrensbok as compensation obtained. In 1866 he entered on the side of Prussia, allowed his troops join the Main Army, joined the North German Confederation and concluded a military convention with Prussia. Recalling he donated the commemorative medal of the campaign 1866. The Grand Duke took part in the imperial proclamation in Versailles in part on 18th January 1871.

Married was the Grand Duke since February 10, 1852 Princess Elisabeth Pauline Alexandrine ( born March 26, 1826 † February 2nd 1896 ), the third daughter of the Duke Joseph of Saxe- Altenburg ( 1789-1868 ) and Amalia nee Princess of Württemberg. From this marriage came two sons:
