Petr Brandl

Peter Johann Brandl ( born October 24, 1668 Prague, † September 24, 1735 in Kutna Hora, also Brandel or Prantl, Czech Petr Brandl January ) was a German painter of the Baroque in Bohemia.

Education and success

Brandl was from 1685-1691 students of the Prague court painter Christian Schröder. Here he learned the art of Dutch and Italian masters know. However, his model was the painter Karl Skreta ( Karel Škréta ). The first portraits, with whom he soon became known, he made at age 19. There followed orders religious institutions for religious works with which he acquired great reputation. Since 1694 he was a master painter of the Old Town colliery. His works include portraits, genre paintings, religious images and pictures from mythology. He is - in addition Wenzel Lorenz Reiner - referred to as the most important painter of the heyday of Bohemian Baroque. One of his students was Christian Philipp Bentum.

In his pictures he chose dramatic productions which he combined with light sources and shading. The vibrant nature of its personalities allowed him to paint accurate portraits. JQ Jahn wrote of him: "He modeled all the figures and groups of figures in the mud, so he could read them the refraction of light and shadow. "

Origin and family

Johann Peter Brandl was the son of wealthy parents. His father was a tailor and innkeeper, probably of German origin, his mother came from a peasant family in Přestanice. He attended the Jesuit school. At 33, he married the daughter of a painter, with whom he had three children, which he later left. His son Anton was an engraver. Although he was well paid for his work, he lived in disordered financial situation and led an unsettled life. So he had to be ransomed only by the abbot from the Königgrätzer debtor's prison, for example, for performance of the contract of Grüssau main altarpiece.

Towards the end of his life, Brandl settled in Kutna Hora, where he - said to have died impoverished - despite the great artistic success. His grave is located in the Our ​​Lady's Church.

The artist is a distant ancestor of the contemporary Austrian painter Herbert Brandl and contemporary American and Swiss painter Mark Staff Brandl.
