Petre Steinbach

Petre Steinbach ( born January 1, 1906 in Temesvár, Austria - Hungary, now Timişoara, † 1996 in Germany ) was a Romanian football player and coach from the ethnic group of the Banat Swabians. He played 90 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A, and participated in the World Cup 1930.

Career as a player

Steinbach began playing football in his hometown at RGM Timişoara. In 1928 he joined Coltea Brasov, where he won the Romanian championship in the same year. After a year he moved on to Unirea Tricolor Bucharest. Steinbach was Unirea Tricolor ten years faithfully and was runner-up in 1934. In the season 1937/38, he was barely used and could thus not prevent the descent of Unirea Tricolor. Nevertheless, he remained loyal to the club, but switched to local rivals Olympia Bucharest, where he finished his career in 1940.

National

Steinbach graduated 18 games for the Romanian national football team, but he fired it no goal. He made his debut on October 12, 1930 against Bulgaria. Previously, he had been nominated for the FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, was there but not used.

Career as a coach

During his playing days Steinbach was the coach of his club Unirea Tricolor Bucharest.

After the end of World War II he spent some time in the Soviet Union. In the fall of 1946 he returned to Romania and took over the coaching job at Carmen Bucharest. At the beginning of the season 1947/48 he took over the reigning champions ITA Arad, with whom he not only defend the championship, but could also win the Cup victory in 1948. After the season, he supervised on June 6, 1948 against Hungary for a game, the Romanian National Football Team. The team conceded 9-0 heaviest defeat ever.

In the summer of 1948, Steinbach coach of CFR Bucharest (now Rapid Bucharest). With his new club, he could ( behind Flamura Roşie UT Arad ) to achieve twice the runner-up for the seasons 1948/49, ( behind ICO Oradea ) and 1950.

Later was Steinbach coach Farul Constanta, AS Armata Tirgu Mures, Neamt Piatra Ceahlăul and the Romanian Youth National Team.

In 1960, Steinbach was arrested after returning from a youth tournament in Vienna and sentenced to prison. In 1975, he finally emigrated to Germany, where he died in 1996.
