Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny

Petro - Konashevich Sahajdatschny ( Ukr Петро Конашевич Сагайдачний, pol Piotr Konaszewicz - Sahajdaczny; . * 1570 Kulchyntsi, then the Kingdom of Poland, now Ukraine, † March 20, 1622 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian military leaders, politicians and hetman of the Zaporozhian Cossacks in the years 1614-1622.

Petro Sahajdatschny participated with his Cossacks on the side of Poland - Lithuania in the war against the Ottoman Empire, which contributed significantly to the success of the defense of Turkish aggression.

He died on March 20, 1622 in Kiev to wounds he had suffered during the Battle of Chocim 1621.

Late honors

  • On the back of a Ukrainian hryvnia coin a portrait of Sahajdatschny is shown and his ship, a typical Cossack boat.
  • On July 4, 1993, it was the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, the Hetman Sahajdatschny, named after him.
  • On 22 July 1995, the post of Ukraine issued a postage stamp with the image of the hetman's worth 30,000 Karbowanez.
