Petrogradsky Island

The Petrograd Island (Russian Петроградский остров ) is the third largest island in the Neva delta of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Together with the Rabbit Island, the pharmacist Island, and the Petrovsky Island, the islands form the historic district of Petrograd Side. (Russian: Петроградская сторона ). It is the administrative center of the Petrograd Rajons and is home to several universities and research centers, as well as museums, cultural and recreational facilities.

Geography

The Petrograd island lies between the Neva and its tributary, the Great Nevka. In the north the Karpovka separates them from the pharmacist Island, in the west the Small Nevka of the Cross Island, in the south the Zhdanovka of the Petrovsky Island and southeast Kronwerksgraben of the Rabbit Island.

It is connected to the Troitsky Bridge with downtown, on the stock exchange bridge and the Tutschkow bridge with the Vasilievsky Island, on the Small Petrovsky bridge to the Petrovsky Island, on the New Lazarevsky Bridge and the Krestowski Bridge to Cross Island and on the Sampsonjewski and Grenadier bridge with the Vyborg Side.

History

In the 17th century, Finnish and Swedish farmers were a Russian settlement located to promote the development of the island. In 1703 Peter I then laid on the nearby Rabbit Island the foundations for the Peter and Paul Fortress. During this time he lived in the vicinity of St Petersburg's oldest square, the Troitsk - place ( "place of the Trinity " ) at the southeast end of the island, after the establishment of the early 18th century Gorodski Island ("city island " ), and then Troitsky island was, until it was renamed in 1725 after the death of Peter I in St. Petersburg island or St. Petersburg island. The administrative center of Saint Petersburg moved in the 1720s to Vasilievsky Island, and when in the 1730s it was banned, stone houses to build north of Kronwerk, this meant that the island has developed into more of a suburban residential area.

One of the first major road was the Bolshoi Prospekt ( Avenue ) from the 1730s that crossed the island from northwest to Tuschkow Bridge in the southwest, and the Parisian Grands Boulevards took as a model. The other main road on the island is the Kamennoostrowski Prospect, built in the 18th century, which starts with the Kronwerk Esplanade. When Leo Tolstoy Square in the north, he crosses the Bolshoi Prospekt and then leads south to the Troitsky Bridge to Kamenny Island. In the 1820s he was one equipped with special paving road. In 1914, Saint Petersburg was renamed Petrograd, the island finally got its present name, the Petrograd island.

Attractions

The Petrograd island is home to several prestigious universities and scientific research institutes. The State Medical University of St. Petersburg IP Pavlov, founded in 1897, is located in the Leo Tolstoy 6-8, and was the first Russian Institute for Women.

The State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics Saint Petersburg is one of the leading technical universities in Russia. The Moschaiski Military Academy of Space ( Schdanowskaja -Straße 13 ) is a polytechnical education institution and Space Research Center of the Russian armed forces.

Of historical interest is the Aurora, a warship of the Russian Navy, and a symbol of the October Revolution of 1917., It is a museum ship since 1956 and is located on the large Nevka near the Sampsonijewski Bridge at anchor.

Just north of Kronwerk, in the former Theatre Park Aquarium, today Lenfilm studios, there was 1896, the first cinema screening. On the island is also the Festival Theatre Baltic House, the Jubileiny Sports Complex, the St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Zoo Planetarium.
