Petrus Albinus

Peter Albinus (actually Peter of whiteness; * June 18, 1543 in Schneeberg, † July 31, 1598 in Dresden) was a professor at Wittenberg, who is considered the founder of the Saxon historiography.

Life

His father was Peter Weis, built as a builder of the Hospital Church in Schneeberg. This was married to Magdalena Pretty, the daughter of a council treasurer and mining entrepreneur who had moved from Nuremberg to Schneeberg. According to the then customary practice Peter Latinized his name to Albinus. After attending the Latin School in Schneeberg and the Prince's School Meissen Albinus studied in Leipzig, in 1553 acquired the baccalaureate and worked in Lauban. In 1559 he entered the University Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder and 1564 Leucorea in Wittenberg. He focused mainly on legal and historical research.

In Wittenberg, he took on the task, the history of Upper Saxony and the Wettin of Georg Fabricius to complete. So he registered in 1579, the letters and documents of the Meissner pin. From 1579-1588 he was dean of the University of Wittenberg, took over in 1586 the Rector and worked until 1588 in Wittenberg. 1588 Albinus was appointed as secretary of the Elector Christian I of Saxony in Dresden, where he was the sighting of the entire Saxon House records has been transmitted. There he died on July 31, 1598.

During his time at Wittenberg, he wrote the existing as handwriting history of his home town of Schneeberg ( Schneeberger local chronicle, 1574 ), partly it was printed as Meißnische country and mountain Chronicle ( 1580-1589 ), many remained unfinished. Other chronicles are in manuscript by him in the archives, so of Altzelle, Annaberg, Crimmitschau and Torgau. Several volumes of unpublished collections are held in the Dresden library.

Although his research do not meet today's scientific standards, it counts for his work as the founder of the Saxon History, local history and historiography. Albinus was married twice. First in 1576 with Ludmilla and Fritsch 1584 Magdalena, a daughter of Samuel Selfisch, with whom he had eight children.
