Petrus Mosellanus

Peter Mosellanus (* 1493 as Peter Schade in Bruttig - hence also called protein or Protogensis - on the Moselle, therefore Mosellanus, † April 19, 1524 in Leipzig) was a humanist, scholar and Roman Catholic theologian sympathetic to Martin Luther and other reformers.

Life

Mosellanus studied from 1509 to 1511 ( Baccalaureus Philosophiae ) about the same time along with Konrad Heresbach, John Bockenrod and Gerhard Westerburg at the University of Cologne on Bursa Montana, founded by the theologian Heinrich von Gorcum, strictly Thomist. In the summer semester 1515 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig and received here after studying fine arts and theology at December 28, 1519 the academic MA degree, on August 20, 1520 to the cursor ( Baccalaureus biblicus ) and 9 November 1523 he received his doctorate for Sententiarius. 1517 he took over as the Chair Professor of Greek language. There he continued the work of Richard Crocus, who moved to the University of Cambridge on his part. To Mosellanus ' students included, inter alia, Julius von Pflug, Georgius Agricola, Joachim Camerarius the Elder and Christoph Hegendorf.

With the Wittenberg theologians Philipp Melanchthon, the Mosellanus met in August 1518, a deep friendship, which ( was Melanchthon Lutheran ) even by different theological positions could be shaken evolved over the years. Melanchthon was present later in Mosellanus ' death.

1519 held Mosellanus the (Latin ) inaugural address that it held so-called Leipzig disputation between the Catholic theologian Johann Eck and Martin Luther and the Reformers to Andreas Bodenstein ( Carlstadt called ). His attempt to mediate between the parties to the dispute failed. He had sympathy for the reformers; he himself was " convinced Erasmians " - with him joined him an intense exchange of letters.

He was a master at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. In the summer semester 1520 and summer semester 1523 Mosellanus was rector of the University of Leipzig. From 1520 until his death he was at the collegiate Grand Fürstenkolleg to Leipzig.

His grave was located in the Nikolai Church in Leipzig, but there is no longer present, since the classical reconstruction of the church all grave sites were built over.

Honors

In Bruttig -Fankel located at his birthplace in the village of Bruttig a small plaque, and next to the Old Town Hall of the Peter - Mosellanus Fountain, erected by the traffic and Beautification Association Bruttig -Fankel.
